Hijri to Gregorian

Choose a year from 1356 to 1500 AH.

Calculated on the Umm al-Qura calendar. Where a month begins with a local moon sighting, the date can be a day earlier or later.

Which calendar this uses

The converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, the calculated Hijri calendar published in Saudi Arabia. It is the Hijri calendar built into every modern browser, so the conversion happens on your own device, with no server and nothing sent anywhere.

A calculated calendar can differ from the date your community keeps. Many communities begin each month when the new moon is sighted locally, and that can put their date a day earlier or later than Umm al-Qura's — most noticeably at the start and end of Ramadan. When a date matters, check it against the announcement you follow.

How the conversion works

Gregorian to Hijri is a direct lookup in the browser's calendar. The other direction is a search: the converter estimates the day from the average length of a Hijri month, about 29.53 days, then checks the days around the estimate until it finds the one that falls on the date you entered. A Hijri month has 29 or 30 days, so the converter tells you when a 30th does not exist that month.

It covers the Hijri years 1356 to 1500, roughly 1937 to 2077, which is the range the browser's Umm al-Qura tables are made for. The khatm planner uses the same calendar for its Ramadan preset.

Questions

Why is my local Hijri date different from this one?

This converter uses the calculated Umm al-Qura calendar. Where a month begins with a local moon sighting, the date can be a day earlier or later. Check important dates against the announcement your community follows.

How many days are in a Hijri month?

29 or 30. The Hijri calendar follows the moon, so its months alternate between the two lengths, and a Hijri year is about 354 or 355 days — around 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year.

When does Ramadan start next year?

The converter can tell you on the Umm al-Qura calendar: pick day 1 of Ramadan in the Hijri-to-Gregorian box. Where the month begins with a local moon sighting, it may start a day either side.
